Orthodontics for children
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic checkup by the age of 7 to see if any treatment is needed. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated.
Early treatment can:
- Regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches.
- Gain space for permanent teeth
- Avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions
- Reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth
- Correct thumb sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems.
Bottom line-sometimes starting early can make things go smoother as your child grows! However, Dr. Ghaffari is very conservative when it comes to early treatment and will only advise starting treatment when absolutely necessary.

Every patient is unique and so is their treatment plan. We have different options to choose from, including metal braces or discreet options such as clear ceramic braces or Invisalign. No matter your age, orthodontics can lead to a healthier bite, and reduce the risk for future gum disease and other related issues.
